8 Tips to Get the Best Out of Capture One

Capture One is used by professional photographers and photo editing agencies. Capture One is a complicated software and requires practice. However, it’s not difficult to get used to once you are familiar with it.

Capture One offers powerful editing tools, including high-quality color accuracy and extreme versatility. If you know how to use it correctly, Capture One may be your only photo editor. These tips will help you use Capture One’s full potential and create a productive workflow.

You can customize the interface however you wish

Capture One allows you to customize the interface to your liking. Capture One allows you to customize the interface to your needs and expertise. You can, for example, open panels with the tools that you need, even if they share the same functionality (e.g. Curves Level and Color Balance), add tools to panels, scale and place panels wherever you want, and customize shortcuts. Capture One also allows you dock and float panels.

You can customize the interface even more. Capture One lets you save an interface configuration to be used later under the name Workspace. You can create a workspace for editing macro photos, travel photos and general editing. The default workspace is also available. It is well-organized. The panels guide you through all the important editing steps, from browsing through your photos to making adjustments and lens corrections to exporting.Screenshot by Peter Dam

Shooting tethered

You can connect your camera to the editor to view the results of your shots in real time with tethered shooting. Capture One offers one of the best tethered photography features on the market. It would be a shame not to use it. You can control your camera’s settings, including shutter speed, ISO and exposure compensation. Capture One’s tethered photography features Live View and remote control for some cameras. This allows you to view the image on large monitors before you take it. You can also make sure that the focus is exactly where you want it.

You can also create templates and save your photos in folders automatically. Capture One allows you to overlay a style on a photo and view the results in Live View. This is great for sharing a preview of the final result with clients. Tethered shooting can be used for commercial outdoor photography. You will need a tripod table, a laptop and a stationary setup.

Export your image in multiple file formats

The customizable export is another useful feature. You may need multiple formats or sizes for your photo. You may need a high-quality print, but a lower resolution for social media. You may also want to save a JPEG file that is optimized for your website and one that is full-size to use in your portfolio. Capture One lets you create process recipes, and export the same image in multiple formats at once. A process recipe can include settings for file names, output folders, file size, file format, file size, styles to be applied at export, as well as the level of sharpening.

Focus Mask allows you to take a lot of images

Focus Mask is a tool that allows you to see the focus area by masking it. This tool is useful for both tethered and culling photos. It’s difficult to determine if you have the focus right, especially when looking at similar photos with a shallow depth of field. Instead of zooming in on each photo and looking at them individually, the Focus Mask can make culling easier and quicker.Screenshot by Peter Dam

Explore Capture One’s colour tools

Capture One’s color editor is available in three options (Basic, Advanced and Skin Tone). It allows you to adjust individual colors or a range of colors as well as all colors except one. You can enhance certain colors, change one color, correct color casts, blend specific colors or create natural-looking results. The Skin Tone tool is a useful feature for portrait photographers. It can be used to enhance skin tones, remove spots, or correct color imperfections.Screenshot by Peter Dam

Each color can be adjusted to adjust its hue, saturation, or lightness. You can also save color edits as presets and styles. You can also use the color tools to create masks based on selected colors. If you wish, you can add sharpening to specific colors. These color tools allow you to make subtle adjustments and create natural-looking images. They are also very versatile and offer endless editing possibilities.

Clearance modes are available

Clarity is essential for landscape and nature photographers. Capture One offers four options to improve clarity. None of these affect the colors. Capture One’s Clarity modes increase contrast to the luma range. There are four options for increasing clarity and local contrast: Natural, Punch and Neutral. You can control Clarity or Structure with each one. Clarity is used to reduce haze in larger areas, while Structure can be used for smaller areas such as grass, foliage, and fabric texture.Screenshot by Peter Dam

The Natural method is the best for beginners. It’s universal and can be used for all types of photos. The Classic method is best for portraits. Neutral works well for commercial and architecture photography. The Punch method, which is almost identical to Neutral, but much more dramatic and powerful than its name suggests, can also be used.

Presets and styles for stacking

You want styles and presets to help you manage your workflow when you are on a tight deadline and have many photos to edit. Capture One’s unique feature is the ability to stack presets and styles as separate layers, optimizing your workflow. This is not possible in Lightroom or other popular photo editing apps. You should choose presets and styles that focus on different aspects of your images. They will cancel one another.

You can, for example, create presets that you use frequently, such as Clarity, Exposure, Curves or High Dynamic range. Multiple presets can be created for the same action with slightly different parameters. The stacking option is then enabled and the presets are applied to your specific needs.Screenshot by Peter Dam

Because styles can have settings from multiple tools there is a higher chance that styles will influence each other. Yet, stacking opens endless editing possibilities. Styles can be applied to layers, so that you can control opacity and blending modes. There are endless creative possibilities.

Directly publish to your portfolio

After you have finished editing your photos, you want to publish them in your portfolio as quickly as possible. Format is currently the only provider of a native Capture One plugin that allows you to upload photos directly from Capture One into your Format portfolio. The upload process is easy after installing the plugin into Capture One. You can upload your photo to the Portfolio by right-clicking on it and choosing “Upload to Portfolio”.Publish > Format. You can modify some export settings but you must ensure that the image is uploaded to the right gallery in your online portfolio.Screenshot by Peter Dam
